  • National Nordic Museum

Corti Construction is proud to have completed a unique project which will be on public display for years to come. This freestanding structure that Corti built from the ground up is located at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. The shelter will protect a showpiece of the museum’s collection, the Nordic Spirit, a fishing vessel built in northern Norway and dating back to the 19th century.

Our team collaborated with Mithun, the award-winning architecture firm, who designed the newly opened Nordic Museum. This shelter protects the Nordic Spirit and complements the aesthetic design of the beautiful museum. Beginning in late August with completion in late October 2023, the project was greatly satisfying and presented Corti with a challenge or two.

This shelter will provide museum guests with the opportunity to see the Nordic Spirit in a beautiful outdoor location come rain or shine. Corti is proud to have played a role in the continued life of this stunning historical watercraft. The shelter can be seen along with all the museum’s exhibits, including one of six troll sculptures by Danish environmental artist Thomas Dambo, at 2655 Market Street NW in Seattle. • Corti had the privilege to host Russ and Laurel Youngstrom of Youngstrom Safety to provide safety education to our team. Russ worked in various construction trades early in his career.

    Youngstrom Safety Presentation

Corti had the privilege to host Russ and Laurel Youngstrom of Youngstrom Safety to provide safety education to our team. Russ worked in various construction trades early in his career. Throughout those years, he admits his commitment to using safety equipment was hit-or-miss. In 1993, Russ fell from scaffolding at work without fall protection engaged and severed his spinal cord. He became a paraplegic, confined to a wheelchair while battling on-going complications. He has had to accept he will eventually succumb to these injuries from what was a preventable worksite accident. He and Laurel have spent years tirelessly traveling and speaking about how one momentary lapse in judgment can alter life forever. Their message is simple: Proper safety equipment must be used 100% of the time on the jobsite.

Their story is visceral and graphic, but it’s heartwarming to see their commitment to helping others avoid a similar fate. And I say “their” story because with the extent of Russ’s injuries, Laurel’s life has been irreversibly impacted as well. She is his permanent caretaker. Yet despite these hardships, they are an inspiring duo. Our team members were deeply touched by Russ and Laurel’s incredible story and had many questions for them after listening to their message. I highly recommend hearing them speak if you haven’t had a chance. BE SAFE!!
